The citizens of Sri Lankan origin from these countries could obtain dual citizenship after they are interviewed by a Cabinet-appointed panel,
granting dual citizenship was put on the hold for some time and when president Mahinda Rajapasha visited the Sri Lankan community in Italy

The granting of dual citizenship was suspended by the government two years ago and it was widely belived that this was a step to prevent certain members of the Tamil diaspora who were critical of the government obtaining citizenship in Sri Lanka.
The Cabinet earlier granted approval for the amendment of the relevant laws.
