Medical Council Challenged by University Teachers –Don’S say Carlo must fight




University teachers have informed the medical council that they are concerned about amendments made to the university act .

Prof. Carlo Fonseka the President of the Sri Lanka Medical Council is a well respected academic, social activist and above all a good human being loved by many.

Now this good man has received a not so friendly letter from his fellow academics complaining regarding the recent amendment made to the Universities Act


They are complaining that the  amendment made to the University Act by a  Gazette notification makes amendment the pre-requisite of all non state institutes recognized as degree awarding institutes to obtain a compliance certificates from professional bodies has become discretionary.

The complaint is that the Sri Lanka Medical Council will no longer have the power to regulate the quality of medical education.

Professor Prof. Carlo Fonseka has always made it clear that he supports private medical collages but he has never said that the medical council should give up its powers to regulate standards.


Now what happens next? – Let’s wait and see.
