Minister Rauff Hakeem, leader of the Muslim Congress is faced with a dilemma:to stay with Mahinda or to quit.
The All Ceylon Muslim Congress, led by Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, has already pledged to support to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Reportedly Minister Rauff Hakeem, has held discussions with top rung leaders of the common opposition including the opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
However, Common candidate of the opposition Maithripala Sirisena and opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe have decided to reject Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem’s demand for a separate administrative for Muslims in the East. The same proposal has already been rejected by the UPFA government and that was one reason why the SLMC went on to hold discussions with the common opposition.
A separate administrative district for Muslims has been a key demand of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress in the recent past.
The SLMC leadership may be under heavy pressure from its members and community as many Muslims are not happy how the government has treated them when anti muslim sentiments have been expressed by groups such as Bodu Bala sena.
