The clash had taken place after an opposition rally held in Beruwala in support of common opposition Presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena.
Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the clash took place when those who attended the rally had met at the house of an opposition politician in the area.
The opposition claimed that Government supporters arrived at the location and attacked the vehicles of opposition members, including that of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, who were at the house.
The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE), a local election monitoring group, said that the attack had taken place when Kumaratunga and Provincial Council member Hirunika Premachandra had gone to the house for dinner after the rally.
According to CaFFE at least 4 vehicles were damaged in the incident while part of the house of the opposition politician in the area was also damaged.
CaFFE quoted Premachandra as saying a mob had surrounded the house when she and Kumarathunga were inside and then attacked the house with stones.
SSP Ajith Rohana said that an ensuing clash had left three people injured. He said that the STF was sent to the area to ensure further clashes do not occur.
He also said that a special police investigation has been launched into the incident. (Colombo Gazette)
