Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) today, unanimously agreed to back the common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena for the next Presidential election.
The UNP expressed its support to the former government minister at the party’s annual convention held today at the party headquarters Sirikotha.A proposal was moved by UNP MP Joseph Michel Perera to support Maithripala Sirisena and the general assembly passed it unanimously when the leader of the party Ranil Wickremasinghe called for a vote.
The 55th annual congress of the UNP was held today at party headquarters with the participation of a large number of UNP members.
Addressing the massive crowd gathered, party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe said that the unity of UNP has strengthened the opposition. He further said that the UNP would be the major force that would handle parliament after January 08.
Wickremesinghe said the country needs an economy which can fill the pockets of people and invited the people to line up to eradicate poverty and develop the country.
UNP general secretary Tissa Attanayake said that the attempts to undermine the power of the UNP would be prevented.
Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, deputy leader Sajith Premadasa, Chairman of the Leadership Council Karu Jayasuriya and all the other party seniors were present at the convention.
