President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in a statement conceded that requests made by international partners was
one of the reasons to lift the state of emergency.

But, added that his forces had assured him that the emergency was no longer required as security has been assured to the public.

The state of emergency was imposed after the reported detection of
weapons and explosives, but the opposition has raised doubts about the incident and claim it was a hoax.

The President noted that requests were made by international partners of
Maldives who called for the lifting of the state of emergency and
restoring of the rights and freedoms enshrined in the constitution.

“In light of the possible adverse impact on the Maldives’ tourism and
the economy” was also considered President Yameen said.

On September 28 an explosion was reported in a speed boat carrying
President and his wife and soon after the Vice President Ahmed Adheeb
was arrested.
