A new political party made up of a breakaway faction from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is in the offing with the objective of contesting the next Parliamentary elections, Political sources said. Discussions are currently underway on the formation of the group.
The move came amidst reports that at least six sitting members of the UPFA is to extend support to the UNP to get over the current political crisis in Parliament.
Political sources said that the formation of the new party and its decision to contest elections separately will be a key in the formation of a national government in the event if the UNP led United National Front is able to form a government.
The UNP is currently in the process of forming a broad alliance to contest any future parliamentary elections and set to be discussing even sacrificing its party symbol inorder to contest under a new symbol.
