GTF will not support a separate state

Global Tamil Forum (GTF) Spokesman Suren Surendiran assured parliamentarian Sarath Weerasekara that his organization would not support a separate state.

He said that if he supported a separate state he wouldn’t have been in Sri Lanka.

The former Public Security Minister raised the issue at a meeting held in Committee Room 2 of Parliament, chaired by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

The GTF delegation is here for talks with the government and other political parties to reach a post-war consensus on how to bring communities together.

Venerable Kalupahane Piyarathna, former commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, who was with the GTF delegation to meet the President and the Mahanayaka Theros, speaking to Lanka News Line said that this is an initiative that is moving through transparent dialogue.

Meanwhile, the initiative is been criticised by other Tamil Diaspora groups, saying that the GTF does not represent the wider Tamil community of the Diaspora.
