Online sexual violence against children is increasing

Sri Lanka is facing a massive problem with the rapid increase of online sexual violence against children.

Child porn, cyber extortion, receiving indecent text messages, cyberbullying, and even online gambling for children are among these crimes, and unfortunately, most of these cases have not been reported.

According to a recent study carried out by Save the Children, three out of 10 Sri Lankan children face some type of online violence.

The data from this study, carried out in 2021, has been confirmed by a number of other studies.

The US National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which tabulates country reports, revealed that in 2021 alone, its tip line recorded a staggering 152,811 incidents of online child sexual exploitation and abuse content hosted from Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan government has taken some steps to address the issue of online violence against children. In 2020, the government passed the Prevention of Online Sexual Harassment and Exploitation of Children Act. The act criminalizes the production, distribution, and possession of child sexual abuse material, and it also provides for the protection of children from online grooming.
