According to the Ceylon Electricity Board  Media Spokesman Eng. Noel Priyantha more than 500,000 have had their electricity supply disconnected until October this year Most of these disconnections have been domestic supplies Normally disconnections are carried out after a thirty-day arrears.
CEB tariffs have been revised on three occasions and disconnections skyrocketed with more than eighty thousand disconnections being carried out in the month of August.
The Month of October had about seventy-five thousand disconnections.
The CEB has about seven million users and currently, about 1.7 of the customers have had their supplies disconnected.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that several prominent – and privileged – companies and individuals have arrears in payments on electricity bills but have their electricity supply uninterrupted.
Sri Lanka’s ex-ministers have run up massive electricity bills when they overstayed in official residences after losing their ministries and left after defaulting to the electricity board, it was revealed in parliament.
State Minister for Water Supply Sanath Nishantha recently settled the Rs. 2.6 million electricity bills that covered the cost for the 2019 wedding of MP Namal Rajapaksa which was unpaid for a long time.
