Indian Ginseng is also for women.

Ashwagandha has become a top market brand, as research has highlighted its medicinal benefits. Popularly known as Indian Ginseng or Amukkara in Sri Lanka, it has long been recognized as a dietary supplement in the West and as a drug that helps to cure premature ejaculation, impotence, and low sex drive by improving nerve function. Ashwagandha can be taken with warm milk, honey, and ginger. It shows anti-ageing, anti-stress, and antidepressant properties.

More recent research findings have highlighted that Ashwagandha regulates reproductive hormones. Limited research from 2013 also suggests that ashwagandha may help improve cognitive impairment in people with bipolar disorder. A 2021 review concluded that ashwagandha may help manage depression, anxiety, insomnia, and other mental health-related and neurological issues. Studies indicate ashwagandha possesses anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antistress, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, hemopoietic, and rejuvenating properties. It also appears to exert a positive influence on the endocrine, cardiopulmonary, and central nervous systems. The mechanisms of action for these properties are still under study

The mechanisms of action for these properties are not fully understood. Ashwagandha is no longer just a men’s herb. Its ability to balance hormones can be particularly beneficial for women’s health, impacting aspects like the menstrual cycle, reproduction, and menopause. 2019 research suggests ashwagandha impacts the endocrine system, which governs mood, stress responses, and reproduction.

Preliminary studies have found various constituents of ashwagandha exhibit a variety of therapeutic effects with little or no associated toxicity.

Ashwagandha supplements are in increasing demand, and ashwagandha’s popularity based on its health and nutritional benefits is expected to drive market growth. However, the market is somewhat hindered by poor clinical trials associated with Ayurvedic medicines.

India, the world’s largest producer of Ashwagandha, exports it to countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, the United States of America, South Africa, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, and others in raw form (dried leaves, dried roots), root powder, extracts, capsules, tablets, and formulations. A few Sri Lankan ventures have tried out repackaging Ashwagandha extract imported from India with little success. However, as indigenous medical physicians of Sri Lanka point out, there are several Ashwagandha formulas known to the local indigenous medicine practice that need further study for validation of their medicinal qualities

Global Market

The global Ashwagandha extract market value will expand from US$ 698 million in 2023 to US$ 1,523 million by 2033. Over the assessment period, sales of Ashwagandha extracts are anticipated to surge at a robust 8.1%. Demand in the market remains high for powdered Ashwagandha extracts.
