Media regulatory proposals under fire

The government is planning to establish a regulatory body for all media, including social media.

According to Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, a study is underway to map out the structure of a new regulatory body.

In March 2021, The Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) and allied organizations submitted an outline of the proposed government proposals.

Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa accused the government is attempting to introduce new laws to suppress free media in Sri Lanka, under the guise of establishing the Broadcast Regulatory Authority.

Within the last few years, a number of media regulatory proposals have been presented and all attempts have been challenged by media activists.
