Professor Emeritus . Ariyarathna Athugala of the Department of Mass Communication was felicitated by his collegues and students at the University of Kelaniaya recently.
Professor Ariyarathna Athugala, a versatile academician who has treaded a long and illustrious pathway in his glittering academic carrier silently sat with his wife Shachi Ratnakara by his side while others spoke of his contribution to the discipline of mass communication, creative work, and passionate teaching.

Senior professor Sunanda Mahendra elaborated of Professor Athugals innovative teaching approach which spanned over four decades.

In addition, a documentary film directed by the Lecturer Ms. Ileka Ruwanpathirana was also shown on the academic and artistic life of Professor Emeritus Mr. Ariyarathna Athugala. Appreciating the services of Professor Emeritus Mr. Ariyarathna Athugala, Commissioner Mr. Niroshan Thambawita also presented a special souvenir on behalf of the Sri Lanka Press Council.

Prfessor Ariyaratne Athugala’s debut film ‘Saho’ (Comrade ) which was released recently has been screened at a number of international Film Festivals.

Scripted and directed by Athugala himself the plot of the film is woven around the complexities of campus life.
Professor Athugala entered filmmaking as an undergraduate directing a 16mm short film titled ‘SinaKandulak’. Later he directed teleplays ‘Siththara Gurunannse’, ‘Ramya Nagaraya’, ‘Thunbiya’, ‘Suseta Mayam’ and ‘Samanala Kandawura’
