The ‘Prophet’ is in remand

Pastor Jerome Fernando, who calls himself a ‘prophet’, is now in remand prison.
He was remanded until December 13 after being produced before the Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage.
It is alleged that, on or about April 30, 2023, Jerome Fernando addressed a large gathering of people and made numerous statements that were derogatory of other religions, specifically of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam.

The CID had commenced investigations against Pastor Jerome for insulting other religions and for the alleged commission of offences under Section 291B of the Penal Code and Section 3(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act of 2007.

The use of the ICCPR in Sri Lanka has been controversial.

The prophet has a considerable following and is said to have connections in high places. Previously, it was reported that the’ Prophet’ had accessed restricted areas of the Bandaranaike International Airport last year to welcome his ‘Spiritual Father’ Uebert Angel.
