Canada’s Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, and Persons with Disabilities, Kamal Khera, , lauded Tamils as a “driving force” strengthening the nation’s vibrant tapestry.  She highlighted the pivotal role of government policies in welcoming Tamils since 1983, emphasizing how this influx “enriched Canada’s social, cultural, and economic landscape.”

A Celebration of Heritage:

As Tamil Heritage Month unfolds, Canadians from coast to coast will join hands with the community, celebrating their rich heritage through cultural events, traditional art forms, and delectable culinary journeys. The Tamil diaspora in Canada, numbering a vibrant 240,000 according to the 2021 census, has built a unique and resilient community through language schools, community events, and unwavering dedication.

Key Elements of a Proud Culture:

Arts and Culture: Bharatanatyam, Carnatic music, and numerous folk art forms flourish through community centers and festivals. From the rhythmic grace of dance to the melodies of music, Tamil culture comes alive. And then there’s the food! Dosa, idli, kottu parotta, and a variety of flavorful vegetarian dishes tantalize the senses, offering a taste of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka

Shining Stars: A number of Tamil Canadians have made remarkable contributions in diverse fields.
Arts and Culture: Maitreyi Ramakrishnan shines on global stages, Shanthi Sundram preserves classical dance, and Gajan Sundaram blends tradition with contemporary sounds.

Literature and Academia: Award-winning authors like Shyam Selvadurai and Dr. Anita S. Arudpragasam explore themes of identity and history, while Dr. Sunthar Thangiah champions critical scholarship and human rights.
Politics and Community Building: Rathika Sitsabaiesan advocates for inclusivity in Parliament, Yogaratnam Ariaratnam fights for community rights, and Dr. Selvi Yoganathan empowers through healthcare leadership.
