Kehelya: More Checks

Maligakanda Magistrate Lochana Abeywickrama has directed the examination of former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella by a seven-member medical panel to verify the authenticity of his claimed ailments. The magistrate instructed the Director General of Health Services to present the panel’s report to court by February 29. Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama questioned the validity of Rambukwella’s medical reports, asserting they were photocopies and dated from 2011 to 2017. The DSG alleged that the doctor supporting Rambukwella’s bail had not conducted any recent medical examinations in the past five years.

The Health Checks

Remanded since February 3, Rambukwella’s health status was cited by the Prison Hospital, preventing his court appearance on February 15. The medical panel, led by the Director General of Health Services, is tasked with evaluating Rambukwella’s actual health conditions, determining if he can attend court, and specifying the ailment hindering his presence. The panel must answer court-raised questions and, if a medical condition is identified, assess whether prison hospital treatment suffices or alternative options are needed. Additionally, the panel will scrutinize prison hospital reports to confirm Rambukwella’s health issues and advise the court accordingly. The move seeks clarity on Rambukwella’s health status amid concerns over the authenticity of presented medical documents.
