Sri Lankans Rescued in Myanmar

Eight Sri Lankans who were trapped in the Cyber Criminal Area (CCA) in Myanmar had been rescued, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Myanmar, Janak Bandara, told journalists.

Speaking from Myanmar, Bandara said the rescue operation had been carried out by Myanmar troops.

Bandara said the rescued Sri Lankans were now at the Myawaddy Central Police Station in Myanmar.

The Sri Lankan Embassy was taking steps to repatriate the rescued individuals back to Sri Lanka, the Ambassador said.

In December 2023, it was revealed that 56 Sri Lankans were trapped in CCA.

Bandara in December said those Lankans had been duped into coming to Myanmar on tourist visas by racketeers, who promised them IT-related jobs across the border in Thailand.
