Athula Wansinghe Awarded Queens Service Medel

Athula Wansinghe has been awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for his services to the Sri Lankan community and cricket.

Wansinghe, vice president of the Sri Lankan Association of New Zealand, played a significant role in coordinating support following the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, the 2018 Easter Sunday terrorist attack in Sri Lanka and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am happy, delighted, and honoured by this award, given in recognition of my contribution to the community and cricket in New Zealand,” he says.

Wansinghe is also a senior umpire and a junior cricket coach in the Wellington region. He has been collecting food for food banks, setting up community libraries, and organizing cultural events to help Sri Lankans in New Zealand connect to their cultural roots.

He introduces himself as a community-focused professional keen to make people happy

and someone with a super-great passion for cricket.
