Lawyers Call Tiran to Step Down

Minister Tiran Alles  has called  upon newly-passed out police recruits to eradicate criminals and it will be sin not to do so.

BASL President Kaushalya Nawaratne said that The Council of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) passed a resolution condemning the recent statement made by Public Security  Minister Tiran Alles.

A  combat motorbike unit to eradicate criminal elements in the Western and Southern Provinces at the STF Camp in Katukurunda, Kalutara has been set up  and the Minister made these controversial statement while  speaking to the new recruits.

International obligations

The Bar Council  has called for the Minister to step down and said that they would  resort to local and international legal action as required if the Minister fails to steep down or be removed.

The Supreme Court in recent case ( Fathima Sharmila’s case) observed: ‘The prevention of extra-judicial killings or custodial deaths invites raising the domestic standards to meet international obligations in upholding the inviolability of life, supplementing the fundamental rights protections of the
domestic law.

The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (SLHRC)  disclosed that 24 suspects lost their lives while in police custody in 2023.
