The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) led by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa have made it clear that the party will be calling for an election.

The indications came at the inaugural rally of the SLPP in Anuradhapura on February 9 where not only the President and Prime minister hinted of the elections, but cabinet ministers too making it clear that elections were coming up.

Whether it would be the long delayed Provincial election or the local election was not clear, but the possibility of the elections being held this year was strong.

Prime Minister Rajapaksa called on the opposition, if possible to face elections and achieve victory adding that his party would now reached out to the public.

President Rajapaksa called the public to keep faith in the government without listening to misleading statements.

Some of the points which the SLPP would focus at the election campaign were clear and one of the key points is set to be the success in the vaccination programme against COVID19.

The President also recalled that his government was involved in protecting heritage sites such as Deegavapiya – another topic which is likely to be focused during the elections.

The government’s decision to announce 100,000 projects in the rural areas is likely to be in the focus during an election campaign.

Any elections, whether it be provincial or local election will be an acid test to the government after the August 2020 Parliamentary elections.
