Shani is acquitted, but what next?

The master investigator and super cop, Shani Abeysekara, is acquitted of all allegations. Now information is flowing in about how his own colleagues tried to frame him with false allegations.

The allegations against Abeysekara are serious and could have resulted in a death sentence if things had gone wrong at the court hearing. The officers who blatantly harassed and penalized the senior police officer while he was struggling with ill health needed to answer questions that would be difficult to answer. Fabricating false evidence is a serious offense.

Abeysekara was framed with falsified evidence related to the Mohamed Shiyam murder case in order to get former DIG Vass Gunawardena cleared of all charges. As a result of these charges, Abeysekara lost his promotion and was forced to retire without a pension. He was also remanded for a very long time.

CID SI Sugath Mendis, who refused to give evidence against Abeysekara, was also remanded. Abeysekara filed many cases against the powerful Rajapaksa clan. Soon after Gotabaya Rajapaksa became president, he transferred Abeysekara to Galle with a demotion.

It is said that the conspiracy plan was to get Abeysekara the death sentence as revenge for getting DIG Vass Gunawardena convicted in the Shyam murder case.

Senior State Counsels informed the Attorney General that there was no credible evidence against Abeysekara, but things moved very slowly.

The long, drawn-out ordeal that Abeysekara went through needs to be fully investigated, and the culprits need to be exposed and shamed if justice is to prevail.
