Seven FR Against IGP

Seven FR Against IGP

Seven Fundamental Rights petitions filed challenging the decision to appoint Deshabandu Thennakoon as the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the IGP were today fixed for April 2 by the Supreme Court.

Court was informed that the parties were yet to receive minutes pertaining to the Constitutional Council appointing Deshabandu Tennakoon as the new IGP.

leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa  commenting on X said that :CC didn’t approve IGP’s appointment. Votes: 4 for; 2 against; 2 abstentions. At least 5 votes are required for a decision. Speaker has a casting vote only in case of a tie. 4/2 is not a tie! Constitution is being blatantly violated for the second time. Shame on you speaker

Mean while Civil society activist are questioning the reason for the  members of the constitutional council to abstain from voting. Understandably it is the two civil society representative’s who have abstained from voting.
