Cement from Hambanthota

The Hambanthota port has sparked controversy for the moment with the arrival of a Chinese military ship. Still, it soon may come into the headlines by producing loads of cement to boost the construction industry.

The US$ 3 million investment by INSEE cement will be the largest warehousing facility inside a port in Sri Lanka for raw materials used in the production of cement.
The warehouse is to be constructed within six months will hold a capacity of 45,000 cubic meters and is being built on a 17,300 sq meter plot of land.

Nandana Ekanayake is Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the project said “.we signed the 10-year lease agreement with the port, to construct this 100,000 square foot warehouse for slag.”

The facility will store shipments of cement raw material arriving at the Hambantota International Port and later be transferred to the production plant.

Currently, cement prices have increased by about 200 percent since last year and it’s too early to predict if this new production facility will calm down skyrocketing cement prices.
