Julie Chung reminds Sri Lanka of obligations to ensure free and open Indo-Pacific Ocean

The United States (US) has once again reminded Sri Lanka of its obligations to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific Ocean policy.

The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, tweeted saying Sri Lanka’s leadership is essential to supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Chung said that she met with the Director General of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Rear Admiral Anura Ekanayake, and made her first official visit to the Southern Province yesterday.

In reality, Sri Lanka cannot play a defining role as it is caught between many superpowers and has to deal with an economic crisis. The United States, India, Australia, and Japan are the key players in the Indo-pacific ocean.

Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickramasinghe said that   Sri Lanka does not want to see rivalry between the great powers in the Indian Ocean region and emphasized that Sri Lanka wants to see the Indian Ocean region as a peaceful region.
