The Foreign Relations Committee of the United States said in a tweet: “Any @IMFnews agreement with Sri Lanka must be contingent on CBSL (Central Bank of Sri Lanka) independence, strong anti-corruption measures, and promotion of the rule of law. Without these physical reforms, Sri Lanka could suffer further economic mismanagement and uncontrollable debt.”

This is a clear indication that the Ranil- Gota alliance needs to put things correct in many corners if meaningful negations on economic recovery is to take place.

Most countries have started to provide aid thru organizations such as the world food programme, world health organization, Food and agricultural organization etc .

This also signals the stability of the government. The present government is challenged with the task of proving that it’s stable and capable of coming up with a credible recovery programme.

Canada and Britain are funneling their assistance through international agencies.

Meanwhile, the United States is working on resolutions before the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) over human rights violations and alleged war crimes by the Mahinda Rajapaksa and new evidence-gathering mechanisms have been put in place and . fresh evidence is emerging.

On the other hand, the USA has been providing humanitarian aid and on the development side, it is working with business entities to develop entrepreneurship.

The US Ambassador also tweeted last week highlighting the importance of the corruption-free distribution of funds. She said, “Oversight and transparency are critical components of our assistance programmes. US aid is only awarded to partners that adhere to globally recognized monitoring and evaluation standards. This ensures that funding is accounted for, and assistance reaches those who need it most.”

It is clear that many foreign governments want to see structural change, but on the other hand, there are signs of these governments promoting action for change.

It could be that these foreign governments are in the opinion that the mood and mode for change is a purely internal matter.
