Jaffna airport is to be functional once again and the authorities are planning to attract Indian tourists. Most flights will be to South Indian destinations. The cabinet has given the approval to commence flight operations.

Jaffna Airport is Sri Lanka’s third international airport, and India’s Alliance Air, a subsidiary of Air India operated weekly flights to the airport in the 2019 year from Chennai.

The airport was originally built by the Royal Air Force during World War II, Domestic civilian flights resumed in the mid-1990s, and in 2019 it became Sri Lanka’s third international airport

According to a business commentator Jekhan Aruliah:

“Jaffna International Airport is about more than tourism. It opens a route for investors and executives to fly from India in less than one hour. Fresh produce, including our prized Northern seafood, can reach India far quicker than it does Colombo. If the runway is further improved as promised, flights will come from countries including Malaysia, Singapore, and beyond”.
