By Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said that Cabinet Ministers are not authorized to increase electricity tariffs and that the any tariff hike on electricity should be made by the PUCSL
No decision has been taken for an electricity tariff hike, as news articles circulating regarding cabinet approval are insufficient to cover the loss of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), said.
He said that several media reports had reported that the Cabinet had approved an increase in the electricity tariffs in two steps, in January and June 2023.
