The JVP trapped in a local government trap

The Janatha Vimukti Peramuna (JVP)has been making considerable progress in the last few months with its front line organization Jathika Jana Balawegaya.

The leader of the JVP Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been emerging as a speaker with much firepower on the political platform and has been able to push forward to become a strong presidential candidate.

However, now it is becoming clear that the intention of the government is to conduct an election for the local government units including Pradeshiya Sabhas, Urban Councils and Municipal Councils.

Leader of the House Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, addressing a ceremony said that local government elections will be held soon.

The JVP has its roots in rural Sri Lanka but as was evident at the last presidential and Parliamentary elections it has about a vote base of only about 3 percent, which mainly comes from the urban suburbs.

The gains that the JVP has been able to make within the last few months in the political arena may be challenged if it is not possible to get a fair number of votes at the local government elections.

The JVP leadership has instructed its carders to immediately strengthen its local-level organizational network.
