Call to arrest Gota in Singapore.

The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) has called upon the government of Singapore to arrest Gothabhaya Rajapaksha for violating the Geneva Conventions during the civil war in 2009.

Gothabhaya Rajapaksha served as the secretary of dependence during the last days of the civil war.

Rajapaksa is currently in Singapore after he had left the country due to public protest. The government of Singapore has announced that he is on a private visit.

The complaint lodged by the International Truth and Justice Project to the Attorney General of Singapore claims that the then Defense Secretary committed grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions during the civil war in 2009.

The South Africa-based ITJP points out that “Singapore has a unique opportunity with this complaint, with its own law and with its own policy, to speak truth to power.”

Reuters claimed that Rajapaksa could not be reached for comment through Sri Lanka’s High Commission in Singapore. However the government of Sri Lanka as well as Gothabhaya Rajapaksa have repeatedly denied war crime allegations. The Attorney General’s Department In Singapore has confirmed that they have received a letter from the South African based the International Truth and Justice Project ,but declined to comment further.

“We are not able to comment further on this matter,” the spokesperson said.
