UK parliamentarians calling for action on Sri Lanka

The backbenchers are making a call to impose ‘Magnitsky’ style sanctions on Sri Lanka and refer the human rights violations to the International Criminal Court ‘Magnitsky’ sanctions target those responsible for human rights violations or corruption.  The backbenchers have pointed out that Sri Lanka needs to meet its GSP+ commitments and reduce its excessive spending on the military. Elliot Colburn Conservative MP for Carshalton and Wallington and Chair of the All-Parliamentary Group for Tamils called on the UK Government to propose conditions prior to finalizing an IMF bailout.

“Criminal accountability should be pursued by referral to the International Criminal Court. Those who commit war crimes should not enjoy immunity because the state in question is unwilling or unable to prosecute them ”,

he said.

Siobhain McDonagh, MP for Mitcham and Morden mentioned the names of  Sri Lanka’s Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva, and Secretary to the Ministry of Defense General Kamal Gunaratne, and said that such officials need to be taken to task for human rights violations.
